Glaucoma is a group of diseases that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, which is the “neural cord” linking the visual information reaching the eye to the brain where this image is interpreted. The main risk factor is the increase of intraocular pressure.

Glaucoma makes it go lose peripheral vision and the person may not be aware of them until the loss is already severe (tunnel vision).

It can occur in two basic forms:

  • Open-angle glaucoma (chronic) is the most common and damaging vision is slowly without the person noticing, because it is often asymptomatic.
  • Closed-angle glaucoma (acute) due to blockage of the aqueous outflow and causes an increase in intraocular pressure in the eye that can damage the optic nerve fibers. The person may notice eye pain and vision loss, plus or photophobia red eye.

It is important to review the fundus, take the intraocular pressure and a visual field to control glaucoma.
